History & Heritage (HTTP 200). Government of Ireland Act 1921 established a separate Supreme Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland and recognised a separate Bar of Northern Ireland. First General Council elected after a meeting on 26 October 1921. One hundred years on, the Bar Council remains the body responsible for governance, regulation, and representation; comprised of an elected body of 20 practising barristers; elections for Chair, Vice Chair, Bursar and General Council take place bi-annually. Bar Library established 1933; professional base for all barristers in independent practice. Unlike England and Wales, there is no chambers system; barristers in independent practice are self-employed and rely on the Bar Library. Inn of Court of Northern Ireland came into existence in 1926.
